LARGE GARDEN
A lot needed to be packed into this garden so every inch counted when it came to laying out the new design. The existing rear plot had not been developed to any great extent so we had a clear canvas to design from.
The clients wanted some formality in style and a clear distinction between the garden areas. The orientation of the sun had an important say in the layout as a swimming pool was desired along with an outdoor kitchen entertaining spot. The younger children needed a safe area for lawn games separate so not to disturb the main garden area.
The front garden needed to act firstly as an attractive frontage to the property and at the same time accommodate a variety of family cars both in a proposed three car garage and the driveway area.
The layout of the new garden primarily took its proportions and lines from the house facade and window and door locations which is a neat design trick – this trick visually links the garden layout to the house from which we could build up and divide the garden into a series of ‘rooms’, visually separated by formal tree runs in pairs and in rows.
These beautiful tree specimens highlight and frame the transitions from area to area and contribute a major aesthetic value to the scheme. Building up vertical divisions also partly screens each ‘room’ so offering a series of pleasant surprises as the user explores the garden.
This garden is a space that the whole family can enjoy with guests for many years and as the garden grows it will develop a greater sense of journey and character.
The garden provides interest all year round and is relatively low maintenance due to a high proportion of evergreen trees and shrubs all mulched with a thick bark to deter weeds. A beautiful and very useable practical space has been created and has added a valuable addition to this prestigious family home.
