The Brief:

The Brief:

A common interest of the client (and designer) in Japanese gardens inspired this design on a much sought after prestigious hill in Surrey. Previously the garden had been landscaped in a very generic form that offered little consideration to making a connection with the contemporary sprawling house.

A new indoor pool extension leading off of the house had to be incorporated into the design and the views out from within were very important due to the long expanses of glass walls.

The Solution

The Solution

Firstly, we needed to start with a blank canvas and remove a vast amount of the previous landscaping. We then developed a concept that subtly reflected the Japanese style and created a ‘journey’, typically found in Japanese gardens, that has a definitive beginning and end point – a journey through stunning plant specimens selected as ‘living sculptures’ alongside beautiful stone and rock textures.

Subtle lighting directs you around the gardens past a ‘one-off’ stone carved bamboo water feature and singular limestone boulders arranged singularly or in groups to also grab the attention.

The Outcome:

The finished garden is testament to the superb craftmanship of our landscaping team. From all angles of the garden and internally looking out from the house the new garden is a seamless extension of the home. Careful choice of stone and garden features provide a flavour of Japanese garden design and an interesting journey has been created around the pool house glass walls to the main terrace and so on to the central lawns.

Careful choice of specimen planting mimic moss covered stones whilst Japanese Acer trees light up secluded corners with their bright red and purple foliage. The design of the lighting highlights the more architectural planting and allows extended use of space in the summer months. It is easy to enjoy the garden with the pool house bifolds open for those big summer gatherings.
So beautiful! We love the garden and watching it evolve, the transformation was amazing. John worked hard researching the subject of Japanese gardens and interpreted it all wonderfully. Thank you so much John please visit whenever you like.
